SAMPLE PERSONAL FLAG ESSAY

    "Live and let live," is a common saying that to me means everyone has a right to live and be happy. I believe my values support this. My personal flag shows a family together which represents the value of family. The picture of different cultures indicates the value of acceptance. Surrounded by the sun, the different cultures together show the value of unity and collaboration. Education is the value shown by the teacher and student The work indicates the value of diligence. My personal flag explains what I value most in my life.

    The family picture shows the value of family. The family is together, holding onto one another to show they care for each other. A person's family represents the past and the future, as in the grandparents, the parents, and the grandchildren. Carrying on family ideals is important to me, so staying together and helping each other is important. I show this is important by being available when my family needs me, by sharing stories from my grandparents, by being the best I can be to encourage my kids and grandkids to do the same. I show this by going to games and school events for my kids and grandkids, and by celebrating holidays and birthdays with them. Family is important to me.

    Different cultures together shows that I value acceptance of other people and ideas. The picture is of different people and cultures so that represents different ideas as well as people. This is important to me because I see the world as a large village, and that village needs to accept different ideas in order to get along peacefully. I show this is important by learning about other cultures and having friends from other cultures; I may not always agree with them, but I do accept that their ideas are as valid as mine. I would want people to listen to me, too. Accepting other people and ideas is important to me.

    The sun surrounding the different people unites the people as they collaborate with each other. By showing them together, I have indicated they are working together. This is important to me for the same reason as acceptance is important to me: the members of the large village, earth, need to work together, to collaborate, to live peacefully together even though we have different ideas and beliefs. I show this by offering my ideas as well as listening carefully to other ideas. I am willing to try new ways, or at least work together in different ways to help out. For instance, our eighth grade graduation includes Native American drummers, even though that is not a usual practice at other schools; it is now at ours. Collaboration is important to me.

    The teacher and student show educational value. They are working together to learn. This is important to me so because by learning about others and how the world works, I can work with other people to make the world a better place. Education/knowledge is power. By learning about pow wows and how they provide a way to share a celebration or sorrow, I was able to add a part of that to our graduation ceremony, thus making it more important for the parents and community; the students give away something to show their appreciation. I learned something from my students and families. Education is very important in my life.

    The picture of the worker with several papers in front of here represents the value of diligence. Diligence means to work hard; she is working hard because she has accomplished several things. This is important to me because I want to be the best I can be, so working hard, working diligently will help me do that. I show this by doing more each day than I think I possibly can, in my work and for my family. I do not give up. Diligence helps me be the best I can be.

    My Personal Flag visually represents what I value most in my life. Family, acceptance of other ideas and people, collaboration, education, and diligence mean the most to me because they seem to help me do and be my best for my family, my community, and myself. I believe that will help the world even after I am not here. Isn't that important?
